Winehouse Update
I caught a ton of flak for calling Winehouse’s “Back to Black” the best album of the past 5 years. Everyone cited better singers, called her nuts, said that I was crazy and the other stuff that I wasn’t listening to was better than her drivel.
Then…!!! Two blogs I respect* give her album props and I feel like my musical tastes are justified.

The album has vintage production techniques delivered in modern context, it never messes around with a fluffy pop sound and the level of quality instrumentation is as good as anything you see from any other artist.
The lyrics are of weaknesses packaged as love songs packaged.
It’s a tribute to Detroit soul as much as it is surpassing it — using the backdrop of West London as scenery. It’s haunting and uplifting at the same time. The album captures a picture of a fall of a woman aware she’s tumbling. A musical photograph of a moment.
