Winehouse Update

November 27th, 2009 — 02:24 pm

I caught a ton of flak for calling Winehouse’s “Back to Black” the best album of the past 5 years. Everyone cited better singers, called her nuts, said that I was crazy and the other stuff that I wasn’t listening to was better than her drivel.

Then…!!! Two blogs I respect* give her album props and I feel like my musical tastes are justified.

*See: Rolla & Grady and All Songs Considered

The album has vintage production techniques delivered in modern context, it never messes around with a fluffy pop sound and the level of quality instrumentation is as good as anything you see from any other artist.

The lyrics are of weaknesses packaged as love songs packaged.

It’s a tribute to Detroit soul as much as it is surpassing it — using the backdrop of West London as scenery. It’s haunting and uplifting at the same time. The album captures a picture of a fall of a woman aware she’s tumbling. A musical photograph of a moment.

Favorite Albums of All Time // Amy Winehouse “Back to Black”

backtoblack

I can’t get enough of horn-driven music. The emotional power of a trumpet and saxophone combines with a slick trombone sound can turn average to good, good to great.

I can’t get enough of the motown sound, even when it’s not actually motown. Perfectly crafted pop songs with deeper meanings that first appear on the surface.

I can’t get enough of rude singers. Ones that don’t care about the CW and just go for broke in their lyrical content and eff-you-ness.

I can’t get enough of those who respect the past enough to bring it back to the present. People who know that we need to understand where we came from in order to know where we can go.

I can’t get enough of the complex altitudes this album takes you to and I have listened to it so many times that I think I am finally starting to understand it. Sonically beautiful, imperfect in all the right places.

I can’t get enough of this Amy Winehouse album.
